Very proud of the author and illustrator of this lovely new kids (and adults!) book… Sallianne Smales…she was in the first class I ever taught at The Hup Primary School nearly forty years ago and went on to be a teacher too! She also has loads of other talents…creating this book being her latest one. Sallianne is an author and storyteller who is inspiring, motivating and has a passion for books. Her texts are rich and stimulating, which the children are keen to listen to and engage with. Each of the stories is well thought out; the characters have their own unique qualities, and the settings are brought to life through her use of language.
Sallianne is always organised when she is working with groups of children. She has creative ideas on how to present the books and has follow-up activities to extend their understanding and interest further. My experience has been that the children enjoy these experiences and have a keen interest in what can happen in future books.
Sallianne has a real joy for reading, which is infectious both for the staff and children she is working with.

Sallianne has done several Story Time readings for children in our bookshop, and we would thoroughly recommend her. She is always very cheerful and friendly; greeting everyone enthusiastically as they arrive, asking names and making everyone feel welcome and comfortable. She reads clearly and with great expression. She is very engaging and animated, matching the tone of the story and characters. She reads her audience and adapts accordingly, her pace and tone keeping the children’s attention throughout.
During the readings she is very interactive and regularly involves all of the children as well as the audience, asking questions and encouraging them to join in with impressions or noises, which makes it enjoyable and fun for all. We love having Sallianne in for Story Times, it is easy to arrange, she comes prepared and we would definitely like to use her again in the future.

I have been ordering Sallianne’s ‘The Smoozles of Orkneyjar’ books for a couple of years and I have a repeat order for Book 3, when it launches in October. I send these books to my friends and family in Scotland, France, Tasmania and Australia. Children from the ages of 2-10 years thoroughly enjoy the book’s illustrations and exciting rhyming stories. My little girl is four and she is so excited to hear about the next story of Tiddles and Beyla curious adventures. I’ve also given these beautiful books as gifts to two teachers who have shared them with their primary students. I do believe that the Smoozles books make a lovely addition to any child’s library.
